Scores of married Hindu women observe the Vat Savitri Vrat dedicated to Savitri, a chaste woman who rescued her husband from the clutches of Lord Yama, the God of death. This vrat is observed on the Amavasya Tithi in the month of Jyeshtha (as per the Purnimant calendar). However, those who follow the Amavasyant calendar celebrate this festival on the Purnima Tithi of Jyeshtha month.
